Cardinals Nearing 1-Year, $14 Million Deal With Greg Holland

  • Cardinals reportedly near deal with free agent closer Greg Holland, pending a physical

This is a big fall from grace for Holland and his agent, Scott Boras, as before the Rockies signed Wade Davis to be their closer in December for 3 years and $51 million (to make it the most lucrative contract for a reliever ever), the Rockies offered the same contract to Holland...and he rejected it.

Less than two hours before the start of their season, the St. Louis Cardinals found a closer.

Louis agreed to a $14 million, one-year contract Thursday. If the Cardinals complete the deal, they will forfeit their second-highest draft pick in June, now No. 43, and $500,000 of worldwide signing-bonus allocation for the 2018-19 signing period.

Earlier on Thursday, FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman first reported about the deal being close and then added that it was just about done, pending a physical. It is also worth noting Holland's late-season collapse in which he gave up 14 runs in only 6 ⅓ innings in the month of August, racking up three blown saves and four losses in the process. Before long, Holland should take over the closer's role with projected Cards closer Luke Gregerson (hamstring) on the disabled list.

News of the signing broke on Opening Day of the 2018 regular season. Over 57.1 innings of work, he would save 41 games while finishing with a 3.61 ERA.

Holland has 186 saves over seven major-league seasons. Cardinals fans also saw the debut of rookie pitcher Jordan Hicks who showed what he's capable of with a 101.6 miles per hour pitch.
