Egypt's Sisi set to win second term

  • Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi

While the NEA is set to announce results on April 2, Moussa has literally conceded defeat as local media report a landslide victory for incumbent president Abdel Fattah el Sisi.

The results showed that 25 million of the eligible voters have casted their votes, and that Sisi gained 23 million of them, accounting for 97 percent of the valid votes, while Moussa obtained 3 percent of the valid votes.

Official MENA news agency and other state media, namely Ahram and Akhbar el-Youm, have announced al-Sisi victor of the three-day presidential poll which ended Wednesday.

The little-known Moussa, who challenged Sisi, is the head of Egypt's El-Ghad party who registered immediately before the close date for applications.

"The voice of the masses of Egyptians will remain a witness - no doubt - that the will of our nation is prevailing with a force that does not know weakness", Sisi said. Turnout of 47 per cent in that year's election was sharply higher than this year's 40 per cent despite appeals from Prime Minister Sherif Ismail for voters to fulfil their patriotic duty.

Moussa, whose presidential ambitions were questioned by many, has repeatedly acknowledged his support for Sisi and his government policies.

The election was, however, marred by largescale voter apathy as only just over 40 percent of the registered voting population turned out to exercise their franchise.

Authorities were keen to ensure a higher turnout this time around as Sisi saw attendance at polls as a referendum on his popularity and was seeking a strong mandate to fight militants and push through tough economic reforms.
