Writer and producer Steven Bochco, known for creating the groundbreaking U.S. police drama Hill Street Blues, has died aged 74.

The producer has received 10 Emmy's for his producing and writing.

In 1999, the Producers Guild of America honored Bochco with its David Susskind lifetime achievement award, describing his record of quality programs as "the standard all television producers strive for". Bochco took chances. Bochco brought realism, dark comedy and ensemble casts to TV. From hand-held cameras to bare-assed shower shots, his shows pushed television boundaries in both style and content. He attended the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan, where he sang, and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg in 1966 with a theater degree.

Bochco started out as a writer and story editor on series like Ironside and The Invisible Man.

On Monday, dozens of actors and showrunners shared their condolences on Twitter, with House Of Cards creator Beau Willimon writing: "As a kid, Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law were rituals in my house".

"Steve was a friend and a colleague starting with the first episode of Columbo in 1971 that he wrote and I directed", Spielberg said in a statement. Rest well, sir. You will be missed", and Joss Whedom said, "Absolutely one of the biggest influences on Buffy (and me) was HILL STREET BLUES. Bochco had received a stem cell transplant from an anonymous 23-year-old in 2014.

"L.A. Law" (1986-94) and "NYPD Blue" (1993-2005) followed, with both shows enjoying long prime-time runs.

He was also known for "Murder One", "Commander in Chief", "Raising the Bar", "Civil Wars" and "Cop Rock".

Elsewhere in television, Bochco created the CBS police drama Paris, led by James Earl Jones.

Among Bochco's credits are the 1980s hit Doogie Howser, M.D. with Neil Patrick Harris as well as the TNT drama Murder in the First.

Bochco wrote the 2003 novel, Death By Hollywood.

Audiences now have grown accustomed to following a TV show weekly, or even binge watching from start to finish - a trend set by Bochco almost three decades ago.

Bochco once recalled a fan telling him that Hill Street Blues was the first TV series with a memory.

He is survived by his third wife, TV producer Dayna Kalins, whom he married in 2000, as well as daughter Melissa and sons Jeffrey and Jesse.
