  • Secrecy, delays surrounded North Korea leader's slow train to China

South Korean musicians will hold their second and last performance in Pyongyang on Tuesday, this time jointly with North Korean artists, amid thawing tension on the Korean Peninsula. "I rearranged my schedule to come to the concert today", Kim said. It was a surprise because the culture of the South was taboo in the North, and Kim made an exception in this case.

The South Korean outlet Chosun Ilbo reported that Kim and his wife took photos with the young girl members of Red Velvet, despite the fact that "North Korean propaganda still regularly condemns South Korean pop as a symbol of capitalist decadence, and people can be arrested if they are caught listening to it clandestinely".

Reporters were allowed access to the two-hour rehearsal session which ended at 5:50 p.m.

K-pop began in South Korea in the early 1990s, with homegrown labels building the nation's pop industry from the ground up and creating a global entertainment force known for its splashy music videos, dance routines and style.

"North Korea is still very conservative about men singing and dancing", said Philo Kim, a professor at the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies in Seoul.

South Korea's high-ranking officials, including the minister of culture, who attended the concert were reportedly unaware that the reporters had been excluded from the performance.

"When such good atmosphere is preserved carefully and continuously, only the handsome spring when new buds sprout and flowers blossom and the rich autumn when the crops are abundant will always be in the way of our fellow countrymen", Kim said, according to North Korean media. Kim Jong Un applauded during the event and shook hands with the South Korean performers. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim will sit together for what would be the third inter-Korean summit, following meetings in 2000 and 2007, at the border village of Panmunjom on April 27.

Sunday's performance coincided with the start of annual joint South Korean-US military drills, which have previously been met with denunciations and missile launches by the North, and were delayed and shortened this year in order not to overshadow the Olympic detente.

The South Korean delegation included artists, concert staff, taekwondo demonstrators, reporters and government officials.

Seohyun, an actress and vocalist with South Korean girl group Girls' Generation, sang a North Korean pop song called "Blue Willow Tree".

Do responded that working-level talks should be held after the inter-Korean summit later this month, expressing hope that sports would help advance reconciliation and exchange between the South and North.
