  • Ex-Catalan Police Chief Indicted Over Involvement in Independence Referendum

The separatist leader is wanted on Spain on charges of corruption, rebellion and sedition for his part in the region's push for independence from Spain.

The German court rejected a request to extradite Puigdemont for treason, which is Germany's most comparable law to rebellion. It wasn't immediately clear when he would be released, though it appeared unlikely before Friday morning.

The official, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity, said "Spanish justice will adopt the appropriate measures in the face of these new circumstances".

Puigdemont was imprisoned in Neum√ľnster after being arrested at his entry to Germany through the border with Denmark, following an order given by the court of that city to keep him in prison and avoid his escape.

"The actions for which the subject is being prosecuted would not be criminal under German law", the court spokeswoman said.

The court has been considering what to do about a Spanish extradition request for Mr Puigdemont for more than a week. "But since extradition on rebellion charges is impermissible, the risk of flight is substantially lessened".

After six weeks of highs and one dizzying low, Beilein didn't sound particularly interested in sliding into the offseason at all. While his teammates hit just five of their first 17 shots, Di-Vincenzo rallied the Wildcats to the nine-point halftime lead.

Sanchez said in a letter from a Madrid jail published Thursday that he was ready to try again to be elected.

The rebellion charge would carry a maximum sentence of 30 years' imprisonment, while sedition carries a 15-year penalty.

Former Catalan police Chief Josep Lluis Trapero was indicted today by Judge Carmen Lamela of the Spanish national court for his involvement in the independence movement.

He then came under pressure when central authorities urged the regional police to stop the October 1 referendum banned by Spanish courts.

Regional newspaper Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung reported that the politician would also have to report to the police every week and would not be allowed to leave Germany without prosecutors' consent.
