  • Central American migrants gather to talk while they take a break from traveling in their caravan on their journey to the U.S. Oaxaca Mexico

The front-runner in the Mexican presidency, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, weighed in on the issue in a tweet.

Trump has warned about the caravan in a series of tweets in recent days, vowing to stop the migrants at the USA border.

"Is it reasonable for USA interests to block dialogue with Mexico?".

U.S. President Donald Trump " s decision to deploy the National Guard along the Mexican border has made Mexican presidential candidates call for unity to defend the country.

Mexico's Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray said he held talks with Kirstjen Nielsen, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, to clarify the aim of the operation, saying that Mexico will "act in a sovereign way in defense of the nation's interest". We do not accept the use of force, the militarization of the border, problems are not solved like that, said Lopez Obrador in Coahuila, where he presided over several vote-catching rallies.

Jose Antonio Meade, the candidate of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party who ranks third in polls, on Wednesday urged candidates to stand together in denouncing the deployment of troops on the border.

At its height last week, the caravan consisted of nearly 1,500 people mostly from Central America. "We must make it clear to President Trump that Mexico and the United States can continue to have a profitable relationship, of mutual benefit, or move into a confrontational relationship, where we all lose", Anaya said.

"We will reach Puebla in different buses". Zelaya said he, his wife, and their three children are awaiting temporary transit visas that would allow them to continue to the US border, where they hope to request asylum and join relatives in NY. "Then every migrant will be informed of the legal options they have and the difficulties to get a refugee status in the United States, which could mean up to a year in a jail-like situation until everything is solved", Rodrigo Abeja, one of the caravan's organizers, told the Spanish newspaper El Pais.

Most of the group is now in the town of Matias Romero Avendano in the state of Oaxaca. For the organizers, the multitude guaranteed more attention to the plight of the migrants, many of whom were fleeing hardship and violence.
