Washington denied this, and France, which in February had said it would strike in the event of a chemical weapon attack on civilians by Syrian government forces, also said its forces were not involved.

The foreign minister's special assistant for political affairs, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, said Iran opposes employing chemical weapons by any party which is totally unacceptable.

As well as Iran, Russia, Syria, and the US all said Israel carried out the strike on the T-4 Air Base near Palmyra.

Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the US should target "terrorists" in Syria as opposed to its "legitimate government".

Israel did not acknowledge carrying out the strike.

Rami Abdurrahman, the Observatory's chief, said the assault targeted a mobile air defence unit and some buildings inside the air base.

Russian Federation and Syria deny that chemical weapons were used.

Plane Crash on Arizona Golf Course Kills 6
At least 100 people have reportedly died, and local sources have been quoted as saying the death toll could exceed 200. A line of white body bags could be seen on the ground next to what media said was a Russian Ilyushin transport plane.

They say Monday's airstrike hit a house in Dimnat Khadir district, an area that has seen heavy fighting between Saudi-backed government forces and Iran-allied Houthi rebels.

The attack came as the final straw following weeks of sustained airstrikes that killed hundreds of people and injured thousands.

Observers said 14 people were killed in the attack.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's participation in the meeting, alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is perceived by the defense establishment not only as a sign of gratitude to Iran for its efforts to help salvage the Assad regime in Syria, but also as a guarantee of Iran's future role there.

"The timing of the strike isn't coincidental", he said. They have been denied proper education, food, healthcare, and have been forced to live in basements for months to shelter from attacks. The ministry said the attack left a number of Syrian citizens dead or wounded. Trump and Western allies have been discussing possible military action to punish Syria's President Bashar Assad for the attack.

Tehran warned any military intervention would "certainly complicate the situation" in Syria and the wider region.

The Eastern Ghouta area has been under rebel control for the past six years and completely surrounded by the government for almost five years, making it impossible to independently verify the accounts of a chemical attack.
