J&K: Encounter underway in Kulgam, three militants cornered by security forces

A Station House Officer (SHO) sustained a head injury during clashes between the civilian protesters and the security forces in north Kashmir's Baramulla town.

They said that troops of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police, Rashitriya Rifles (RR) and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Wani Mohalla, Khudwani Wanpoh in Kulgam district in the wee hours today.

As the fighting raged, people poured out of their homes and pelted stones at the security forces even as two-to-three militants from the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) reportedly remained holed up inside the house. Two other security personnel were also injured.

While police and army officials maintain that the search operation was in progress, sources said the security forces withdrew following the clashes. Three among them, including two teenagers, succumbed to the injuries on being brought to the hospital.

The martyred soldier has been identified as Sepoy Sada Gunakara Rao.

Doctors named the civilians who died as Aijaz Ahmad Palla, 30, who had a gunshot injury, Faisal Elahi, 15, Bilal Ahmad Dar, 17, and Sharjeel Sheikh 28. Witnesses added that an Army gunship helicopter was also used during the operation.

The locals alleged that the Army fired indiscriminately into the protesting crowds, but a statement issued by the police here said that the civilians were caught in crossfire. Police have sent a communication to the cellular companies directing them to snap down the mobile internet data in Pulwama, Shopian and Awantipora reduce the speed in Srinagar with immediate effect.

The latest civilian killings have again pushed Kashmir on the edge with separatists calling for a strike on Thursday and Friday.

However, some people in Kulgam alleged that the four were killed when security forces opened fire on a crowd that was proceeding towards the encounter site.

One jawan and three civilians have lost their lives in the encounter till now.
