Apple to launch a news subscription service, report says

"We are committed to quality journalism from trusted sources and allowing magazines to keep producing beautifully designed and engaging stories for users", said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services in a statement after the company bought Texture last month.

Following its acquisition of all-you-can-read magazine service Texture in March, Apple is planning to launch a news subscription service, Bloomberg reports today. Apple will reportedly launch this sometime within the next year, using some of Texture's technology and remaining employees (Apple canned 20 of them after the acquisition). Now, Bloomberg believes that Apple is preparing to launch a new Apple News app over the next year or so.

First introduced as Next Issue in 2010, Texture offers subscriptions to over 200 magazines for one monthly price. The acquired Texture app will be integrated into Apple News which will undergo several changes. It is only available in three markets: US, the United Kingdom and Australia. That would involve a premium "News" subscription added to the existing app, similar to how Apple Music's subscription is inside the standard Music app.

Apple has had limited success with its news services applications. This approach would set it apart from Apple's previous Newsstand app, which gave users access to magazine subscriptions on an individual basis.

8-year-old boy slashes students with knife at elementary school
Watkins says he believes the injuries aren't life-threatening, and the students were taken to the hospital by their parents. Monday, Sauk Rapids Police rushed to Pleasantview Elementary, where an 8-year-old had come to school with a kitchen knife.

This ties into expectations of an upgraded Apple News experience within the next year and Apple's lofty goal of increasing profits of its services division by 60% by 2021.

Which makes sense when you think about it. Apple already makes a decent slice of cash by selling music and video on iTunes, alongside subscriptions for Apple Music, so it makes sense that it would want to expand that to other areas. Apple also gets a 15 percent cut from the subscription revenues that are being sold by third-party apps through the App Store, as pointed out by TechCrunch. Texture had about 100 staff.

Launching a news subscription service seems to be right up the company's alley and it could turn Apple News into the new "Netflix for magazines".
