  • Gennady Golovkin to fight Vanes Martirosyan on 5 May in Los Angeles

The positive tests came from two random urine tests in February that were conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency in Alvarez's hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico.

Gennady Golovkin's plans for Cinco de Mayo weekend are finally set, even if it's not the against the opponent or in the city he wanted.

It was then voted unanimously by the NSAC board meaning Alvarez will be free to fight from August with the ban backdated to February when the failed tests occurred. That means the rematch of the pair's controversial draw could now take place on September 15 in Las Vegas.

Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs), 31, a 2004 U.S. Olympian from Glendale, California, is getting the title shot without having done anything to earn it, but Loeffler was desperate to save Golovkin's fight date.

Following the news that Canelo tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol, twice, it was understood his May 5th rematch with Golovkin would be punted down the line.

"Vanes Martirosyan is now the most important fight of my career", Golovkin said.

If Golovkin goes ahead with the bout against Martirosyan, the IBF said it would invoke its rule 5.H, which states, "If a champion participates in an unsanctioned contest within his prescribed weight limit, the title will be declared vacant whether the champion wins or loses the bout".

Abel Sanchez, Golovkin's trainer, was happy that his star fighter did not have to waste a training camp and will indeed get to fight. "I can't wait to unleash him".

"Vanes hasn't been active, but he had been looking for a fight", Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler told Yahoo. "I will always be a clean fighter".

A native of Abovyan, Armenia, who fights out of Glendale, Calif., Martirosyan's resume boasts NABF, NABO, WBO Inter-Continental, WBA International and WBC Silver championship victories against the likes of former world champions Ishe Smith and Kassim Ouma, as well as a draw against Erislandy Lara.
