Were Passengers On Southwest Flight 1380 Wearing Their Oxygen Masks Incorrectly?

  • FAA orders engine inspections after Southwest explosion

The passenger, who has since been identified as mother-of-two and bank executive Jennifer Riordan, has died, according to the Associated Press.

Her employer, Wells Fargo, released a statement calling Riordan "a well-known leader who was loved and respected", while Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said "her leadership and philanthropic efforts made this a better place every day and she will be terribly missed". She died later from her injuries.

Here's how Flight 1380 unfolded. "We're stunned. My heart breaks for Michael", Marianne Riordan said.

"They had a great marriage", Gerard said. It's too soon to determine what happened, said National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt.

Federal investigators said a blade that broke off in mid-flight was showing signs of metal fatigue - microscopic cracks that can splinter open under the kind of stress placed on jetliners and their engines.

Sumwalt said he could not yet say if the incident, the first deadly airline accident in the United States since 2009, pointed to a fleet-wide issue in the Boeing 737-700.

"Unfortunately, a lot of times we discover there's a problem when it fails", Waldock said.

Southwest said in its submission on the federal website it would have to inspect some 732 engines in one of two categories of engines under review - much higher than the FAA's total estimate of 220 engines needing to be inspected across the whole USA fleet.

Southwest said Tuesday that it will conduct ultrasonic inspections of all CFM56 engine fan blades over the next month. Pieces of the plane were found in rural Pennsylvania by investigators who tracked them on radar.

Amazon reveals it has more than 100 million Prime members
Prime costs $99 a year or $12.99 a month in the USA , with similar membership prices in 15 other countries. The Washington Post , in turn, paid Amazon approximately $1.5 million for subscriber services past year .

That proposed directive has not been finalized in the eight months since it was proposed, according to a report in the Seattle Times.

Although the FAA said the directive would apply to about 220 engines, airlines said that because fan blades may have been repaired and relocated, it would affect a far greater number.

The service, Flight 1380, was heading from New York City to Dallas when the engine failed, prompting the pilot to make an emergency landing in Philadelphia.

Passengers described scenes of panic as a piece of shrapnel from the engine shattered a plane window, nearly sucking Riordan out. The broken window is visible a few rows behind the engine. "We can see paint transfer-we can see blue paint transfer, we can see a little bit of red paint transfer, and sure enough, on the cowling, there is a red line that says "hoist here" for maintenance to know where to hoist the engine.so we know that's some of that cowling coming off and hitting the leading edge of that wing".

Kathy Farnan, 77-year-old from Santa Fe, New Mexico, said people seated near her in the front, away from the damage, remained relatively calm.

Phillips tried to resuscitate Riordan for twenty minutes before the plane landed in Philadelphia.

The image, which has gone viral on social media, shows the panicked passengers improperly wearing the masks so that only their mouths were covered, despite safety demonstrations specifically instructing that both the nose and mouth be covered in emergency situations, CNBC reported.

Photos of the plane on the tarmac showed a missing window and a chunk gone from the left engine, including part of its cover. The NTSB and the FAA are investigating the incident.

Being on an airplane more than six miles in the air when an engine blows up and sends shrapnel through a window is an experience so scary that aviation lawyers say it's not just the family of the woman killed on a Southwest flight this week who could have a case.
