According to an exclusive published by The Guardian, a former Home Office employee who has asked for anonymity, said the decision to destroy the disembarkation cards, which dated back to the 1950s and 60s, was made in 2010 and occurred at a time when the Home Office's Whitgift Centre in Croydon was closed and moved to another location.

Labour MP David Lammy, who has been campaigning on behalf of legal migrants being wrongly threatened with deportation, today attacked May's past "boasts".

Pressure was mounting on the current Home Secretary Amber Rudd after a leaked memo revealed she had promised to give immigration officers greater "teeth" to crackdown on illegal migrants just months before the Windrush scandal began.

"She's the one that ordered the vans to go around telling immigrants to go home", Mr Corbyn said.

"Her pandering to bogus immigration targets led to a hostile environment for people contributing to our country".

A WINDRUSH mother whose son died after becoming "depressed" over immigration problems has said prime minister Theresa May "should be ashamed of herself".

In her apology, May said she wanted to "dispel any impression that my government is in some sense clamping down on Commonwealth citizens, particularly those from the Caribbean who have built a life here".

The exchanges came as it emerged 49 people had on Tuesday contacted a new Home Office hotline set up to help Commonwealth citizens whose immigration status has been challenged.

Fighting back against accusations of "callous and incompetent" behaviour under her watch, the Prime Minister told MPs that a proposal for disposing of paperwork relating to the arrival of migrants from the Caribbean in the United Kingdom was approved before she took over at the Home Office.

Rudd claimed in parliament on Monday she was "concerned that the Home Office has become too concerned with policy and strategy and sometimes loses sight of the individual". It is a stain on our nation's conscience and the Prime Minister must act urgently to right this historic wrong.

On May's culpability, he said: "I can't answer that question".

Reports suggested that Mrs May had rejected a request from 12 Caribbean leaders to discuss the issue.

On Friday morning, Lucy Moreton, general secretary of the ISU, the union for borders, immigration and customs staff, said "knee-jerk" decision by May to restrict the discretion of border staff to decide not to deport people sowed the seeds of the Windrush scandal. She should be ashamed of herself and all the other MPs who are on her side they should be ashamed because we are human beings'.
