Inspired by San Diego poll results regarding North Korean relations, Rep. Susan Davis hosted a public panel discussion about negotiations and a possible meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Discussion topics included the upcoming proposed summit between Trump and Kim, recent diplomatic developments, North Korea's nuclear capabilities, prospects for denuclearization and North Korea's relationship with China.

Speaking from London, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says she's cautiously optimistic.

North Korea's abrupt diplomatic outreach in recent months came after a flurry of weapons tests, including the underground detonation of a possible thermonuclear warhead and three launches of developmental intercontinental ballistic missiles created to strike the USA mainland. "This is very good news for North Korea and the World - big progress!" Trump welcomed the statement and said he looked forward to a summit with Kim.

"The announcement is significant, but you know, whether North Korea is truly serious remains to be seen", said Sue Mi Terry, a former CIA North Korea analyst.

A testing freeze and commitment to close the test site alone would fall short of Washington's demand that Pyongyang completely dismantle all of its nuclear weapons and missiles. 'The North is expressing a will for a complete denuclearization.

"This is an action that was taken against weapons of mass destruction, and I think this gave a certain message to North Korea as well", defence minister Itsunori Onodera said.

"They might be looking for freeze-for-freeze deals".

Just a few days ago, that requirement was lifted by Kim Jong Un, making it easier for the world to get what it wants - have a world without North Korea's nuclear threats.

The change in North Korea's policy was announced via state news agency KCNA. Tests were carried out in sequential order to achieve the country's aim.

President Trump tweeted that progress is being made for all - as North Korea said it will stop all nuclear tests.

The decision to halt nuclear and missile testing comes almost a week before the leaders of South and North Korea are due to meet in the Demilitarized Zone between the two countries.

Lassina Zerbo, executive secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, described North Korea's annoucement as "a strong signal and an important step in the right direction".

"We no longer need any nuclear test or test launches of intermediate and intercontinental range ballistic missiles and because of this the northern nuclear test site has finished its mission".

Kim extended an invitation to South Korea's leader to go to Pyongyang, and the two agreed to meet Friday at the heavily fortified DMZ.

According to him, it will contribute to building trust between the North Korea and its southern neighbour, South Korea, as well as other countries in the region. A hotline between the two capitals has been reconnected ahead of the talks.
