  • President Trump gives Veterans Affairs pick a way out amid claims he was 'repeatedly drunk' on the job

Jerry Moran, R-Kan., said Jackson told him during a one-on-one meeting Tuesday that "he has never had a drink while on duty". In fact, you had President Obama basically saying that Admiral Jackson was poised under pressure, that he should be promoted.

Senators indeed should consider Dr. Jackson's abilities carefully.

Allegations began surfacing late last week involving Jackson's workplace practices, including claims of inappropriate behavior and over-prescribing prescription drugs, according to two aides granted anonymity to discuss the situation.

Tester said more than 20 military employees disclosed the as-yet-unsubstantiated allegations to senators ahead of a hearing to debate his nomination to lead the VA.

Veterans Affairs Committee Ranking Member Jon Tester, D-Mont., said to NPR that his panel was told Jackson was "repeatedly drunk" while on travel with Obama and that on overseas trips Jackson improperly handed out prescription drugs to help travelers sleep and wake up.

The evaluations go back to 2014, when Jackson worked as former President Barack Obama's physician. "Basically creating an environment where the staff felt they needed to walk on eggshells around him".

Tester said concerns about the allegations were "bipartisan in nature", including from Isakson.

"I've found no reason whatsoever to think the president has any issues whatsoever with his thought processes", Dr. Jackson said. In the morning, he was making the rounds on Capitol Hill, telling senators in private meetings that he had done nothing wrong and professing to reporters that he was looking forward to his hearing. Patty Murray, D-Wash., a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee. "These very serious questions about Admiral Jackson need answers, and the answers should have been ready well before the questions were raised publicly".

It's looking less and less likely that Ronny Jackson will be the next secretary of Veterans Affairs. He said he isn't sure when, or whether, the hearing might be rescheduled. "This is concerning even for a very ethically challenging White House", she said.

Jackson was named physician to the president in 2013, after Kuhlman left the unit.

"The White House still seems to be feeling its way on the nomination process", said Sen.

The report says staff members described the working environment as "being caught between parents going through a bitter divorce".

Jackson, 50, the Navy rear admiral who White House chief physician, was nominated last month to head the federal government's largest bureaucracy by President Donald Trump.

On Tuesday night, White House Strategic Communications Director Mercedes Schlapp gave a strong defense of VA Secretary nominee Dr. Ronny Jackson.

Prior to Jackson's nomination, Trump had told aides and outside advisers that he was fond of Jackson personally and was said to be particularly impressed with Jackson's performance at the White House press room podium in January, when he offered a glowing report on the president's physical and mental well-being. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and the top Democrat on the committee, Sen.

Later, the White House released hand-written reports from Obama and Trump praising Jackson's leadership and medical care, and recommending him for promotion.

Trump picked Jackson to succeed David Shulkin, who was forced to resign as VA secretary after an inspector general's report uncovered inappropriate expenses.

Reports that Jackson had been accused of misconduct had already thrown his nomination into doubt, with the Senate postponing his confirmation hearings.

Spokeswoman Amanda Maddox cites questions from lawmakers over allegations made about Jackson's past behavior.

Jackson was set to appear this week before the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. In recent days, fresh concerns arose about Jackson's management of the White House medical office, said the officials, who declined to provide details. The VA has a payroll of 360,000 and serves the nation's 9 million veterans.

According to the report, Jackson admitted he had failed to shield the White House medical unit from the leadership drama. He specializes in emergency medicine and served with a battlefield surgical unit in Iraq.

"It's totally his decision", Trump said.

"It has been really careless, maybe even negligent about the vetting in a number of these nominations", Mr. Blumenthal said. "What do you need it for?"
