Filmmaker says Russian TV used his images to back 'fake chemical attack'

  • A map showing the military control over Damascus – April 21. 2018

The event is part of an ongoing clash of narratives between the West and Syria and its key ally Russian Federation about the April 7 attack. Previous reports had said Moscow could supply Damascus with the S-300 system, a development that has troubled Israeli officials as the surface-to-air missile can lock onto targets deep inside Israeli airspace.

The Jewish Star political columnist Jeff Dunetz reports on the Israeli strike ("It had nothing to do with chemical weapons", p. 22) and JTA's Ben Sales considers the Russian connection ("Israel's latest strike imperils its Russian relations", p. 25).

Activists, local rescuers and rebels in Syria claim the Syrian forces used chlorine gas in the attack on April 7 against Douma. The mandate of a joint U.N. -OPCW body delegated to investigate such attacks has expired and Russian Federation has vetoed its renewal.

In the days since the April 14 Western air strikes, top Russian officials have said they may reconsider a pledge Moscow gave a decade ago not to provide Syria with the S-300 system. Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman has said the military will destroy the S-300 outright if Syria dares to fire on any of their warplanes.

"Russian specialists will continue training Syrian military personnel, as well as assist in the development of new air defense systems, the deliveries of which will be carried out in the near future", Rudskoy told the news agency. "If they are used against us, we will act against them".

Israel has not taken sides in the Syrian civil war, but its air force has carried out dozens of airstrikes during the fighting, a lot of them believed to have been aimed at suspected arms shipments to Hezbollah.

On Wednesday, Russian Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi said Moscow will supply Syria with "new missile defense systems soon".

According to Rudskoi, the flight paths of the missiles and the capabilities of the Syrian air defenses, which mostly depend on Russian technology, shows that they were destroyed in five interception areas located to the west and the east of capital Damascus.

Israel and Russian Federation have maintained close contact in order to prevent any clashes between their air forces in the skies over Syria.

"We are naturally concerned about the condition in which the relationship between Israel and Iran in the light of mutual threats and rejection by these countries to each other". "Now that this outrageous act of aggression was undertaken by the U.S., France and United Kingdom, we might think how to make sure that the Syrian state is protected".

"We are seeing an escalation in military activities, which is exactly the contrary" to what they promised, Mogherini said. Especially now that it has become clear the Trump administration didn't have sound evidence of an attack, the hasty decision to resort to force was a foolish one.
