  • Mick Mulvaney Tells Bankers to Pay Up If They Want Favors From Trump

In a meeting with bank executives, Mick Mulvaney, interim director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, told them they should increase their campaign donations to have leverage over lawmakers, reported the New York Times. On Tuesday, he admitted that, as a Congressman, he only met with lobbyists who gave him money - almost 90% of which come from banks and other businesses.

Mulvaney received almost $63,000 from payday lenders for his congressional campaigns. If you were a lobbyist who gave us money, I might talk to you.

Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, blasted Mulvaney for the comments, which the former Republican congressman from SC made Tuesday during an appearance at an American Bankers Association conference in Washington.

Norm Eisen, a former top ethics official under President Barack Obama, said the FBI should investigate whether Mulvaney's actions in Congress were directly influenced by campaign contributions.

Mnuchin to visit China to discuss trade issues
And on Tuesday Trump described his relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping as "excellent". Mnuchin has expressed optimism that the countries could avoid a trade war.

As a congressman, Mulvaney received $63,000 in campaign contributions from payday lenders, and since taking over at the CFPB he has loosened regulations on the payday lending industry, which has been accused of engaging in predatory practices.

Defending Mulvaney's speech, OMB spokesman John Czwartacki said that Mulvaney's comments were being taken out of context. "It's more important than lobbyists and it's more important than money".

Mr. Mulvaney also said he would begin calling the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau by its official statutory name, the more obscure Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) said on Wednesday that Mulvaney has "made it clear that [his] congressional office was for sale" and called on him to resign immediately. Administration officials said the rebranding was an attempt to diminish the agency's public profile.

Mulvaney later said he believes lobbyists swaying the opinions of politicians is an important part of democracy.
