Facebook's Messenger Kids is getting a sleep mode

  • Facebook wants children to take breaks from Messenger Kids

Facebook is adding a "sleep" mode to its Messenger Kids service to let parents limit when their kids can use it.

Parents can now block access to the app during certain time periods on specific days. The company has recently announced that they will be introducing more parental controls to YouTube Kids where it will give parents more control over the content that their kids can and cannot view. "We took this feedback to heart and built a feature that gives that level of control to parents", Tarunya Govindarajan, Product Manager at Facebook, said in a blog post late Friday. The mode is controlled from the Parent Control centre in the parent's Facebook account and the "off times" can be changed at any time. However, growing concerns over the impact that digital devices and social media have on children's emotional and cognitive development has led to calls for Facebook to ditch the app. The app already has some built-in tools for parents, including giving them the ability to control their child's contact list. For example, you could prevent your kids from using the app after 8pm on weekdays when they should be sleeping or doing their homework. When you're setting boundaries around the use of technology, it may be helpful to have a conversation with your child to make sure you have a mutual understanding of the ground rules.

During sleep mode, they won't be able to receive or send messages, neither will they have access to video calls.

Jon Wing, a Davidson County public defender representing Reinking, did not respond to a request for comment. But the Tennessee legislature on Tuesday overruled him, passing a resolution to honor Shaw.

What do you think of the idea of Messenger Kids in general? The social networking giant has no intention of pulling the plug on what is a window into the Facebook world for those yet to reach the ripe old age of 13.

On the other hand, Facebook claims that very little data is being collected in the Messenger Kids app and that the data is being collected for operational purposes or to ensure a good experience within the app. When they attempt to access the app, they'll come across a message asking them to come back later, and letting them know it's in sleep mode presently.
