  • Air strike kills dozens of Yemen rebels including two commanders: Report

Saudi Arabia on Saturday intercepted four ballistic missiles fired by Yemeni rebels, the Saudi-led coalition against the insurgents said, the latest in a string of such attacks against the kingdom.

Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis gathered on Saturday morning at Sabeen Square in the capital Sanna in a historic funeral procession to say goodbye to the President Saleh Ali Al-Sammad and his companions, who was killed in Hodeida, last Thursday by the US-backed Saudi-led air strikes.

Saudi Arabia formed its military coalition in 2015 to battle the Huthi rebels in its southern neighbour and restore the internationally recognised Yemeni government to power.

Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya television reported that the airstrike hit the rebel-controlled Interior Ministry headquarters during a meeting of the rebel group's senior leaders.

Witnesses in Sanaa reported more Saudi-led air raids over the capital during the funeral, without reporting any casualties.

The Huthis, backed by Saudi Arabia's regional arch-rival Iran, confirmed the air strike on Sanaa but gave no details.

Emmanuel Macron urges US
Trump said key flaws in the agreement are the failure to address ballistic missiles and Iran's activities in Yemen and Syria. The last foreign leader to address a joint meeting was Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016.

Al-Masirah, a Houthi-run satellite news channel, acknowledged Houthi leaders met Friday to discuss Saturday's funeral of Saleh al-Sammad, a Houthi political leader earlier killed in a Saudi airstrike.

Shortly after Sammad's funeral began, the Huthis said they had launched eight ballistic missiles into the Sunni kingdom.

Former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed in Sanaa after days of intense fighting between Houthi rebels and his loyalist forces on December 4 a year ago.

The missiles were headed towards the city of Jizan in southern Saudi Arabia, according to a coalition statement.

The attacks came as newly appointed US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was scheduled to arrive in Riyadh for talks that are expected to include discussion of the conflict in Yemen, in which almost 10,000 people have been killed since the Saudi-led alliance became involved.

Yemen now stands at the brink of starvation.
