  • Joseph James De Angelo Jr was arrested in California Tuesday night on two murder charges. The now-72-year-old is suspected of being the Golden State Killer

Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested Tuesday after investigators matched crime-scene DNA with genetic material stored by a distant relative on an online site.

Reporting in Sacramento by Fred Greaves.

Visalia police also have fingerprints and shoe tracks that will be investigated for matches to DeAngelo.

DeAngelo was a "black sheep" who didn't joke around with other officers, said Farrel Ward, 75, who served on the force with DeAngelo.

"While we take our customers' privacy and confidentiality extremely seriously, we support ethically and legally justified uses of groundbreaking advancements of scientific research in genetics and genealogy", company officials said in a statement. He worked as a police officer in Auburn, California for some time, though he was sacked in 1979 after he shoplifted from a drug store.

Ward said DeAngelo was quiet and didn't fit in with other officers. "We have to take time, do it right, and get together to meet", she said.

The FBI said DNA as well as "patterns used in the crimes", led them to believe the same suspect committed "45 rapes, 12 homicides, and multiple residential burglaries" throughout the state.

"For anyone wondering, Exeter is 11 miles from Visalia".

They did not say McNamara's name, but Oswalt said he considered every mention of the Golden State Killer ― a term McNamara coined ― as a credit to her.

Confirming details first reported by the Sacramento Bee newspaper, Grippi said investigators compared DNA samples left by the perpetrator at a crime scene to genetic profiles on the ancestry sites, looking for similarities. Earlier this year, Oswalt - who writes the afterword - released I'll Be Gone in the Dark with the help of other contributors.

Even though family members have stakes in how that information gets shared, they typically aren't involved in the consent process.

But he was stunned to find out the man arrested was DeAngelo, his former brother-in-law.

Huddle told The Associated Press it is "still just going insane in my mind".

After decades of pain and loss, the families of the East Area Rapist's victims finally have closure.

He told that he couldn't remember who brought up the subject.

Emmanuel Macron urges US
Trump said key flaws in the agreement are the failure to address ballistic missiles and Iran's activities in Yemen and Syria. The last foreign leader to address a joint meeting was Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016.

It has been more than 10 years since they spoke.

DeAngelo appeared in court handcuffed in a wheelchair and was wearing an orange jumpsuit. He did and the book instantly became a New York Times bestseller.

A major breakthrough has been made today in one of the country's most infamous serial killer cases.

"She just had a way of being able to get them to trust her and open up", Skrine said. "I said, 'I don't care.' As soon as [I'd] start answering he'd say 'shut up, shut up, shut up'".

Reamer, who now lives in DE, is the mother of an Associated Press reporter.

The suspect was also "involved in the rape and murder of several individuals, including couples, in Southern California", who were tied up in the same manner as the Sacramento-area victims and whose homes were plundered in a similar way, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Sacramento County sheriff says a man suspected of being one of California's most elusive serial killers is on suicide watch and talking to himself.

The ex-fiancee of suspected Golden State Killer Joseph DeAngelo, reportedly a target of his anger, has been identified as 67-year-old travel blogger Bonnie Ueltzen, The Daily Mail reported Saturday.

All the while, her mother was tied up in another room. "Her book and the article that led to the book really amped up all the interest in the case and really put a lot of focus on this", said Oswalt.

The comedian and actor helped finish McNamara's book about the case, "I'll Be Gone in the Dark", after she died in 2016.

The man's daughter said the family was not aware that authorities had taken a DNA sample from him until the Federal Bureau of Investigation contacted her in April 2017 to ask for her help expanding the family's genetic tree as they searched for a suspect.

"Now it feels like this thing that she wanted so badly is done", he said.

This version corrects the spelling of Seth Meyers. In fact, the Golden State Killer had a wife and three daughters.

Prosecutors say Joseph DeAngelo carried out his most violent crimes in the months after he was sacked for shoplifting in 1979.

But was DeAngelo ever actually on McNamara's list of suspects? He is suspected of killing 12 people and raping about 50 and could face more charges.

DNA was just coming into use as a criminal investigative tool in 1986 when the predator also known as the East Area Rapist apparently ended his decade-long wave of attacks.
