Australian Government Plans On Investing About $379 Million USD In Corals Preservation

  • The package will help develop coral that is more resistant to high temperatures and light stress

The Great Barrier Reef will receive a $500 million (€312 million) funding boost to restore water quality and protect the coral from attack by starfish, government ministers in Australia have announced.

Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull's office, along with the ministers for foreign affairs, energy and environment, released a joint statement, commenting: "we want to ensure the Reef's future for the benefit of all Australians, particularly those whose livelihood depends on the Reef..." "The more we understand about the reef, the better we can protect it".

Australia's commitment is the single largest investment for reef conservation and management in the country's history. A study published in the journal Current Biology on January 8 showed that the green turtles in the Great Barrier reef are turning female as a result of the warming water temperatures, threatening the population of the species.

In 2016, Labor also pledged $500 million of funding over five years towards the Reef if elected. He commented on Twitter that "you can not "rescue" the Great Barrier Reef without cutting carbon emissions". The investment also involves the implementation of some lab-grown corals which are more resistant to global warming, in comparison with naturally-grown corals.

"We'll be improving the monitoring of the reef's health and the measurement of its impacts", Frydenberg said from the city of Cairns, a popular jumping-off point for reef tourism.

Professor Verano said the children's skeletons contained lesions on their breastbones, which were probably made by a ceremonial knife.

"Like reefs all over the world, the Great Barrier Reef is under pressure..." An additional $56 million will be used to expand environmental management and compliance operations on the Reef and to support additional investment.

These have been recorded in 2016, and 2017 and almost 900 miles of the UNESCO World Heritage site has been affected.

"And there are major questions about whether coral will have time to bounce back before other bleaching events, which are happening faster than ever before".

It's true that corals' health is more at risk if they are already stressed by bad water quality and predators, so Australia's current efforts aren't entirely pointless. It's even visible from space.

Earlier this month, research published in Nature showed that underwater "heat waves" killed a third of corals on the Great Barrier Reef in 2016, part of the widespread annihilation of corals that took place between 2014 and 2017. Globally, the reefs form nurseries for a quarter of the world's fish.
