Boston is among a list of 20 finalists to land Amazon's second headquarters, which would create about 50,000 new jobs and cost more than $5 billion.

The company is opening a 430,000-square-foot office in WS Development's Seaport Square project - a 7.6 million-square-foot development along the waterfront.

The technology giant is expanding its team focused on Alexa and Audible, opening an office in Boston's Seaport.

Amazon shares ended the US Monday trading session in the red as Jeff Bezos' firm announced plans to expand its Vancouver tech hub.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh called the expansion "great news" for the city.

Amazon said the additional jobs will be in e-commerce technology, cloud computing and machine learning.

"Amazon is excited to create 3,000 more highly-skilled jobs in Vancouver", said Alexandre Gagnon, vice president of Amazon Canada and Amazon Mexico. "In just a few years, we've grown from a handful of software developers and scientists to a team of more than 1,200..."

Good Jobs First, a non-profit resource center for economic development, has urged cities to cooperate and communicate with each other and avoid overspending.

Amazon has announced it will expand its Vancouver tech hub with a new office that will bring 3,000 new jobs to the city. Even without large subsidies, Amazon's second headquarters would drive up the already high cost of housing in Boston, overburden crowded roads and rail lines, and gobble up scarce labor, some critics worry. Amazon's customer fulfillment associates can also take advantage of its innovative Career Choice program, which pays 95 per cent of the cost of tuition to pursue continuing education courses in in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon. However, the loss of skilled foreign workers at tech companies in the US just adds to Canada's growing importance as a go-to country for technology and innovation. Hiring AI engineers will have an impact in multiple areas of the Amazon business, though Alexa is the most obvious beneficiary.

Dougherty says the current structure's architectural features will be preserved, and the tower is expected to open in 2022.
