It is expected that the national Assembly of Armenia will vote for a new Prime Minister on may 1, Pashinyan will declare new parliamentary elections, which according to the Armenian Constitution could be held within two months. Earlier, the Republican party announced its decision not to nominate its candidate for Prime Minister.

Armenia's opposition leader and candidate for prime minister Nikol Pashinyan has called on his supporters to come out for a rally on Tuesday morning when the national parliament elects prime minister. Lawmakers elected him as prime minister this month after approving governance changes that diminished the presidency's power and bolstered the prime minister's. A subsequent failure to appoint a prime minister would result in the dissolution of the National Assembly, leading to snap elections.

"I see practically no obstacles to Pashinyan becoming a prime minister tomorrow", political analyst Hakob Badalyan told AFP.

"The Armenian people will be celebrating their victory here", he said.

The European Union expressed support to Armenia in "its efforts to build a prosperous and democratic society".
