  • Cambridge Analytica ordered to release data on US voter

The UK privacy watchdog has ordered Cambridge Analytica to hand over all its information on an American academic, including details of how it obtained his data and what it was used for.

SCL Elections, a British affiliate data controller for Cambridge Analytica, has been ordered to comply or appeal the order within 30 days or it could face criminal prosecution.

The Enforcement Notice found in favour of Mr Carroll, saying his right to his personal information is protected by the Data Protection Act of 1998.

Carroll's test case opens the door for 240 million other US voters to request their data from the British-based data mining firm under British laws for data protection, the Guardian reported, since the company has claimed to have up to 7,000 data points on 240 million Americans.

Facebook has also said it will keep looking into data misuse by Cambridge Analytica even though the firm is closing down.

"This should solve a lot of mysteries about what the company did with data and where it got it from", he said, according to The Guardian.

Instagram to Soon Allow Direct Shopping and Payments Inside the App
What remains to be seen, is if Instagram will also introduce peer-to-peer payments similar to Messenger in the future. So, players like BookMyShow and PayTM that sell movie tickets will be able to sell tickets on Instagram as well.

Additionally, parallel bankruptcy proceedings will soon be commenced on behalf of Cambridge Analytica LLC and certain of the Company's US affiliates in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of NY. In March, he received a spreadsheet that the company claimed contained all of his personal data to which he was legally entitled.

Carroll requested his data back in September 2017, before the most recent Facebook controversy, but wasn't happy with what he got back. Trump's election campaign had hired Cambridge Analytica to provide data that would prove relevant to the campaign itself, and it is believed that the illegally harvested data had played a role in the successful campaign that saw Trump elected to the United States' highest elected office.

"The company has consistently refused to cooperate with our investigation into this case and has refused to answer our specific enquiries in relation to the complainant's personal data", Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said.

What is the Cambridge Analytica scandal?

Cambridge Analytica is accused of wrongfully accessing the data of over 87 million Facebook users to build political tools which allegedly influenced the U.S. elections.
