  • Britain to enter cooling-off period after bank holiday heat

"This holiday was only introduced in 1978, some 40 years ago, but the record has stood for nearly 20 years when we saw 23.2C (73F) in 1999".

By Monday, temperatures in South East England could reach 82F (28C), higher than on the French Riviera, Southern Spain or even Morocco.

Scots managed to enjoy some well-deserved sun as temperatures soared over the bank holiday weekend.

And according to forecasts, today could be even warmer.

Mr Snell said: It looks likely we'll at least see our warmest Bank Holiday Monday on record on Monday. "I think for most places, if you take the bulk of England and Wales for example, we're looking at somewhere around the low to mid 20s mark", he said.

But forecasters warn the warm sunshine will lead to higher than normal levels of UV radiation, meaning a risk of sunburn.

Monday is set to eclipse that record with temperatures expected to reach 28ºC.

Met Office forecaster Charlie Powell said the highs of 28C were not going to be widespread, with the scorching temperatures being the "exception rather than the rule".

Until now, the mercury has never risen beyond the 28C mark on the Monday of the early May Bank Holiday.

However, it will feel cooler in coastal areas as a southeasterly breeze develops.

Tuesday will remain warm before temperatures ease and showers begin to hit the United Kingdom during the week.

Met Office meteorologist Helen Roberts said the high pressure over Britain and a "plume" of tropical air from the Continent was responsible for delivering the summer-like weather.

Temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 25°C in parts of the North East tomorrow, on what could be the hottest Early May Bank Holiday on record.
