Earlier on Tuesday, the Armenian parliament elected Pashinyan prime minister.

New Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan (R) receives interview in the parliament in Yerevan, Armenia, on May 8, 2018.

Pashinyan secured a relevant number of votes necessary for getting the job after 59 Armenian lawmakers voted to grant him the PM's powers.

Minutes after parliament voted to make him prime minister, Pashinyan traveled to a square in the capital, Yerevan, where tens of thousands of cheering supporters, many wearing T-shirts bearing his portrait, waited to greet him.

Two other factions in addition to Pashinyan's Yelk have endorsed the opposition leader's candidacy - the ARF and the Tsarukyan.

In the event of the parliament's rejection of the action plan, the elected PM resigns and new elections of PM take place.

The signing of the order is a formality required by the Consitution whereby the president appoints the elected Prime Minister.

Sporting a salt and pepper beard, a tan and a baseball cap, Armenia's rising political star channelled widespread desire for change into a broad protest movement. "Corruption will be eradicated", Pashinyan said.

Pashinian, who will turn 43 on June 1, received a hero's welcome when he headed to Republic Square, the main venue of the protests, later in the afternoon.

Acting Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan has announced that he will cease carrying out the functions of the office as of today. "We regard military cooperation with Russian Federation as an important factor of ensuing Armenia's security", he said, adding he will also strive to deepen Armenia's ties with the European Union and the United States.

"We chose a new road in Armenia where the driver will be the people and not clans".

"On the other hand, as the protest movement has shown, he can be flexible", he said.

Members of Pashinyan's Civil Contract party hailed Tuesday as a "historic day", with MP Lena Nazaryan saying it was the culmination of decades of despair and struggle.

A year later Pashinian was elected to the National Assembly on the ticket of Ter-Petrosian's Armenian National Congress (HAK). "And for me, my goal isn't to become prime minister". He was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2010 but was released the following year under an amnesty.

The ruling party said it will not nominate their own candidate for the second round, just like in the first round.
