104-year-old Australian scientist David Goodall ends life

Philip Nitschke, founder of the foundation that helped him take his life, revealed that he did not have a terminal illness but wanted to end his life because his quality of life had deteriorated.
Goodall's last meal was fish and chips, Reuters reports, but the scientist said he hasn't been able to truly enjoy his meals like he used to. According to Exit International which represented Goodall said that he passed away while listening to Beethoven's Ode to Joy. A doctor put a cannula in his arm, and Goodall turned a wheel to allow the solution to flow, Exit International said.
The organization arranged his appointment at Life Circle and raised funds for the scientist to travel business class from Australia to Switzerland.
This is the first time a relatively healthy person has chose to pursue euthanasia, as most who choose to do so suffer from terminal illnesses.
Mr Goodall had lived on his own in a small flat in Perth, Western Australia, until only a few weeks before his trip to Switzerland.
In the last 24 hours Goodall had received a lot of publicity. "All the publicity that this has been receiving can only, I think, help the cause of euthanasia for the elderly, which I want".
He requested that no funeral or remembrance service be held and that his body be donated to medicine or his ashes sprinkled locally.
He said he would have preferred to die in Australia.
What I would like is for other countries to follow Switzerland's lead and make these facilities available to all clients, if they meet the requirements, and the requirements not just of age, but of mental capacity.
The British-born biologist was declared dead at 12.30pm on Thursday, Exit International director Philipp Nitschke said.
