Organizers said the event was orchestrated by the Time's Up movement and the French movement known as 5020x2020 to show "how hard it is still to climb the social and professional ladder" for women.

Since the launch of the fest, only 82 films directed by women have been honoured by an official selection in competition, compared to 1,645 films directed by men, a ratio of less than five per cent.

At the first Cannes festival since the sexual abuse scandals that broke in Hollywood previous year, Cate Blanchett, the head of the jury that will award the Palme d'Or, and veteran French director Agnes Varda read out a statement.

"Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of the industry says otherwise", Blanchett said.

"As women, we all face our own unique challenges, but we stand together on these stairs today as a symbol of our determination and commitment to progress", read part of the statement. Husson is one of three female filmmakers out of the 21 movies in competition for the Palme d'Or this year.

US World News & Report recognizes several local high schools
One other Georgia school, Columbus High School in Columbus, placed just outside the top 100 at 105. The new rankings show some schools slipping within Utah, relative to the rest of the nation.

Chastain a year ago served as a jury member in Cannes, and was critical of the female representation in the festival's main slate.

The festival supported Saturday's protest.

The activism will continue on Monday at an event on the beach where the women will ask Fremaux as well as the artistic directors of the Directors' Fortnight and Cannes Critics' Week sidebars to the festival to sign a programming pledge for parity and inclusion at Cannes going forward.

The Jolly LLB 2 actress is attending the film festival in association with a liquor brand, which is also hosting Kangana Ranaut.
