  • Liberian nurses carry a body suspected of dying from the ebola virus in 2014. The World Health Organisation fears a new outbreak will spread from the Democratic Republic of Congo

The viral disease, which has no known cure or proven vaccine, was first reported in 1976 in the Democratic Republic of Congo and takes its name from a river in that country.

"Community volunteers and groups are critical to stopping the spread of disease, especially in isolated areas, such as the epicentre of this current outbreak", said Dr Nafo-Traoré. According to the CDC, some of the symptoms include fever, severe headaches, muscle pain, fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting, and hemorrhage, in worse cases.

Whitworth said the situation was worrying, but Congo may be better prepared to detect and manage Ebola than other countries since it has had more experience.

Democratic Republic of Congo's health ministry said it had dispatched a team of 12 experts to the north-west to try to trace new contacts of the disease, identify the epicentre and all affected villages and provide resources.

He further stressed the setting up of emergency surveillance operation centers to be chaired by Dr. Babasanya, who led the efforts in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea during the outbreak in 2014.

Sawyer, a Liberian-American, died at a hospital and infected several health workers, including Stella Ameyo Adedavoh, a doctor who defied orders to allow him to leave the hospital and saved Nigeria from a mass outbreak in the process.

"Once Ebola gets into urban areas, especially poor urban slums, it's extremely hard to get rid of the disease".

According to social media, the alert by the government of DRC was issued on Tuesday (May 8) after results of a laboratory test that was carried showed confirmed two cases of EVD. Contacts with the body fluids of an infected victim, including sweat or saliva, can cause a healthy person to contract the disease.

But, now health officials have revealed the first death since the latest outbreak, with another 17 suspected cases currently being treated. The cases were unrelated to the epidemic in West Africa that year in which more than 11,000 people died. With the average fatality rate at roughly 50 percent, the World Health Organization and the authorities are determined in controlling the outbreak.

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service said they received an alert from the World Health Organization (WHO).

This is the country's ninth recorded Ebola outbreak, the last of which was in 2017. It's symptoms are high fever, bleeding, diarrhoea and red eyes, among others. The ongoing epidemic is located in the Bikoro health zone, located in Equateur province, in western Democratic Republic of the Congo and on the border with the Republic of Congo.
