  • John McCain Urges Senate To Reject Nominee For CIA Head Over Torture Support

"I believe Gina Haspel is a patriot who loves our country and has devoted her professional life to its service and defence", he said in a statement late Wednesday night. "I'm not going to sit here with the benefit of hindsight and judge the very good people who made hard decisions, who were running the agency in very extraordinary circumstances", she told the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) are the only Republicans who have publicly said they will not support Haspel, while Sen. We will likely never know: Haspel, whose nomination for director of the Central Intelligence Agency is now being considered by the Senate, refuses to declassify the dark underbelly of her involvement in extreme rendition and torture-by-proxy. For example, while on active duty in the military, I received a directive from the California State Board informing me that as a clinician I was not allowed to participate in any form of interrogation that the board felt would violate my license to practice my profession.

Criticism of Haspel has centered on her connection to the "enhanced interrogations" conducted during the George W. Bush administration, as well as her involvement in executing the destruction of interrogation tapes. "However, Ms. Haspel's role in overseeing the use of torture by Americans is disturbing. Her refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying", McCain said.

A White House official dismissed McCain's opposition to Haspel during a staff meeting, saying "it doesn't matter" because "he's dying anyway, " two people in the room said.

A senior Democratic source told Fox News this week that it was unclear if the Senate Democratic leadership would whip against Haspel, and that several Democrats may eventually vote for her.

The center recalled the conversations while speaking to the media afterward. "'We know what to expect", Simmons said . "But we definitely have more to show".

But Donnelly said that after his conversation and reviewing her testimony he would back her. Harris has since said she will vote against Haspel's confirmation. McCain is recovering from surgery related to his brain cancer in Arizona and was not expected to be present when the Senate votes on Haspel's nomination. Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia - who also is up for reelection in a state that went for Trump - announced earlier this week that he would support Haspel's nomination.

Haspel's confirmation had been complicated by an intent to vote "no" by Sen.

The announcement puts Donnelly at odds with Democrats, who oppose Haspel, and may improve her chances of being confirmed by the Senate.

Over the past few days, Mike Braun, the Republican nominee for Senate in IN, attacked Donnelly for being undecided on Haspel's nomination and playing a political game with his vote, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
