  • Six in Pennsylvania sick from shell egg salmonella outbreak

Twelve more people were confirmed to have fallen ill after consuming eggs produced by Indiana's Rose Acre Farms, bringing the total of sickened individuals to 35.

The outbreak led to 11 hospitalizations but no fatalities.

Illnesses were reported in nine different states - Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Illnesses have been reported in all of the states, the majority of which were from NY and Virginia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

At least 35 people have been infected with a salmonella outbreak tied to the recall of more than 206 million eggs, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports.

In addition to shipping the eggs to grocery stores, Rose Acre Farms sent them to restaurants.

Impacted brands include Country Daybreak, Coburn Farms, Crystal Farms, Sunshine Farms and Glenview. Eggs sold at Publix and branded as Sunups are marked with plant number P-1359D, pack date 048A or 049A and best-by dates of April 02 and April 03. "We vow to do better in the future". "Rose Acre Farms takes food safety and the welfare of our hens, workers, and consumers very seriously".

Dozens of people in nine states have been sickened in a salmonella outbreak caused by eggs. In response, the government prohibited the company from selling eggs from three IN farms where the contaminated eggs originated and required expensive cleanups that threatened to put the company out of business.

Of the 25 people for whom complete information is available, 88 percent, or 22 people, reported eating shell eggs before becoming sick.

More than 500 million eggs from two Iowa farms owned and controlled by Austin J. DeCoster were recalled that year.

"We're disheartened by the additional reported illnesses in recent days and we apologize to anyone who may have been sickened or who has a family member or friend who may have taken ill because of any of our eggs", Gene Grabowski, a representative for Rose Acre Farms, told The Daily Meal.

In February, Triple T Specialty Meats, based in Ackley, Iowa, recalled more than 20,000 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken salad products that may have been contaminated with salmonella.
