VERONA - Voters in the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School district will vote on Tuesday on a $37.2 million budget for the 2018-19 school year with $19.7 million coming from state aid, $14 million to be raised by property taxes and $2.5 million coming from district reserves.

Kenneth Bossert, the Elwood superintendent, said the district's board was mindful of two things: federal tax law and the fact that voters in November approved a $34.5-million bond issue for school renovations. This represents a 1.54 percent increase in the tax levy, which is below the 1.88 percent tax cap.

In cutting 1 mill off the tax rate in 2017, the school district said it would save taxpayers around $1.9 million.

Polls will be open in the Montauk School library from 2 to 8 p.m. "In the very rare instance that a request is very hard to fulfill, we run that request past the board president so they can decide the best way to move forward".

There will be contested Board of Education races in six other school districts across the neighboring towns.

The drop-ins for Robbins and Wilson will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. The district projects that its 2018-19 tax levy - that is, total revenues raised through property taxes - will rise 2.72 percent, rather than the maximum under the cap of almost 4.22 percent.

In addition to selecting a new board member, voters will also be asked to approve a proposed $1.54 million 2018-19 budget, which is down 9.6 percent from the current year.

This year, school elections lack the drama they once held.

Tuckahoe residents can cast their votes from 7 a.m.to 8 p.m.in the Tuckahoe School library.

Some schools are also looking for new board members.

Voters will choose four candidates to serve on the Board of Education. Theresa Dechiaro, is seeking a first term on the Board of Education and Amanda Cavanaugh, is seeking a first term on the Board of Education.

Vestal's budget has come under fire in recent days over a proposed tax levy increase while the district maintains a multi-million dollar fund surplus.

There are three candidates on the ballot: newcomer Brianne Fadale along with incumbent board members Daniel Johnson and Nina Karbacka.
