Israel has said it is acting in self-defense to protect its borders and communities and blames Hamas.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian described the situation as "explosive" and criticised the United States for unilateral acts in the region and Israel for what he said was an unjustified level of violence.

Critics of the president have pointed to the timing for new embassy opening considering the massive loss of life from Monday's protests.

"For people who do not understand the difference between demonstrations against the government in a sovereign state, and demonstrations that basically are attempts of a terror organization to destroy a military barrier, what can we do?" he asked.

"The global community must step in and prevent war, we need to move forward quickly and effectively on all projects that we have discussed for months and months to solve the energy, water and health crisis of the population", he said. "Hamas is intentionally and cynically provoking this response and as the secretary of state (Mike Pompeo) said, Israel has a right to defend itself". "Israel is firing live ammunition at unarmed protesters".

The US on Monday blocked a Kuwait-drafted UN Security Council statement that would have expressed "outrage and sorrow at the killing of Palestinian civilians" and called for an independent investigation, UN diplomats said.

It was not immediately clear what might come out of the session given deep divisions between most of the world and the US, Israel's close ally.

President Trump: US and China Going to Get ZTE Back to Business
President Donald Trump said in a tweet Sunday that he's working to give China's ZTE "a way to get back into business, fast". The president has taken a tough stance on what his administration deems unfair trade practices by the Chinese government.

Kuwait said it would propose a draft U.N. Security Council resolution on "protection of Palestinian civilians" following violence in Gaza and the United States on Tuesday praised what it called Israel's restraint against militant group Hamas.

In fact the records of several countries here today suggest they would be much less restrained.

German spokesman Steffen Seibert said the violence "concerns us greatly", but also accused Hamas of cynically escalating the unrest.

Notably, Kenya was among 21 countries that failed to vote at the UN General Assembly in a resolution aimed at condemning Washington's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Some funerals were held on Monday, while others were taking place Tuesday.

He says President Trump's decision to follow through on his campaign promise and move the embassy sends a message of strength to America's enemies.

In December 2017, eight other countries voted against a United Nations resolution telling America to not recognise Jerusalem as the country's capital. Israel regards all of Jerusalem, including the eastern sector it captured in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed in a move that is not recognised internationally, as its "eternal and indivisible capital". "It certainly does not serve the cause of peace", said Mladenov via video teleconference from Jerusalem.
