Celtics survive 42-point night by LeBron, down Cavs 107-94

  • Celtics withstand James' huge night

Once James leaves, now with every reason to prove the city he's done all the heavy-lifting during this postseason - the team will be riddled with an endless list of bad contracts, one which will hurt the franchise for the near future and likely kill any chances of regaining prominence until those sour salaries are off the books.

But as these fearless and relentless Celtics had done so often this season, Boston calmly overcame a double-digit deficit and, fueled by its third-quarter surge, emerged with a gritty 107-94 triumph over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Tuesday's Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Now the Cavs have to bring the fight to Game 3 at home on Saturday.

James added 12 assists and 10 rebounds.

Celtics withstand James' huge night

Boston's brash forward had spilled beyond the baseline while finishing a third-quarter layup through the contact of Tristan Thompson and then, sitting at the feet of Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck in a game where the score would soon be tied, Morris turned toward Thompson, who was lying next to him, and repeatedly screamed directly in his face.

"I felt like it was uncalled for that type of play there", Horford said. Most notably, Russell was impressed with how Smart defended Al Horford, who went crashing to the floor after a dirty two-handed shove from Cavs no-show J.R. Smith. He looked quite miffed as the officials watched replays before ultimately determining that Smith would be assessed a Flagrant 1. The payoff didn't end there though, because even when Boston missed shots, frequently the Cavs attack wasn't able to get going immediately, because they found themselves needing to regroup instead of getting out on the fast break due to the nature of the Boston offense.

"We really lean on him", said Brown of Horford. And no, this one - no matter how many points it would have counted for - didn't go in either. "We're playing hard. We've got each other's backs, and that's it". Smith was levied a two-game suspension for the act. Some fans and media thought the play warranted a flagrant 2 designation and an ejection due to the vulnerable position Horford was in when Smith shoved him, and there was speculation the league would revisit the play and suspend Smith for Game 3. They can chant and scream all they want; it actually makes me feel better about myself. But it was one of his only miscues in the first quarter. The Cavaliers stretched the gap to eight early in the second quarter when a Jayson Tatum scoring barrage got Boston within 39-36 with 6:22 to play. James has been doing that dating all the way back to high school, however; so he should be able to provide at least a few pointers.

James briefly went back to the locker room after suffering what the Cavaliers called a "neck strain" after taking a shot from Tatum, but soon returned to action late in the second quarter, and finished the half with 25 points.
