Nassar victims, Michigan State reach $500M settlement

  • Larry Nassar Survivors and Michigan State University announce they have successfully resolved existing litigation and agreed in principle to a $500 million global settlement

Nassar was sentenced up to 175 years on MI state charges of sexual assault, to go along with a sentence of 40 to 125 years in prison on three counts of sexual assault with another 60-year sentence on federal child-pornography charges.

The complaint also accuses Strampel of making inappropriate sexual comments to female students, storing nude photos of MSU students on his work computer, and failing to enforce protocols meant to protect female patients following sexual abuse allegations made against Nassar. It has no impact on the ligation against USA Gymnastics or the United States Olympic Committee.

Part of the settlement includes setting aside $75 million in the event of future lawsuits regarding Nassar's abuse.

Lorincz says she told him she wanted to help the university heal, but Engler said working together couldn't occur until the civil suits were settled.

Nassar, 54, who is serving a federal prison sentence of 40 to 175 years in MI, had worked for decades with MSU students as well as U.S. Olympic gymnasts who alleged he abused them, including gold medalists Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney.

Ireland Qualifies For Eurovision Final!
The UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain do not compete in the semi finals as they have a direct pass through to the final. This year, Myf Warhurst and Joel Creasey again get to host the action, both in the semi-finals and in the Grand Final.

The lawsuits were filed in federal court in Grand Rapids, Michigan and state courts in California, where the victims allege that MSU, USA Gymnastics, and people involved in both institutions didn't protect them from Nassar's actions.

Now the New York Times reports that Michigan State has reached a half-a-billion dollar settlement with Nassar victims. It's also unclear where the money will come from.

During the sentencing hearings, many accusers described an ultra-competitive gymnastics culture in which authority figures could not be questioned and Nassar was free to abuse young patients year after year.

In a statement, Brian Breslin, chairman of MSU's Board of Trustees says the school recognizes "the need for change on our campus and in our community around sexual assault awareness and prevention".

The release reported that MSU Board of Trustees approved the settlement during a conference call on Tuesday night. We appreciate the diligent efforts of Mick Grewal and the survivors' attorneys throughout the nation who worked to obtain this measure of justice and healing.

Robert Young, special counsel to MSU, said: "Michigan State is pleased that we have been able to agree in principle on a settlement that is fair to the survivors of Nassar's crimes". The school continued to employ him after he was the subject of a sexual assault investigation in 2014.
