  • New EU privacy rules require online services such as Facebook to get consent for how personal data is accessed and shared

Tronc, headquartered in Chicago, owns some of America's biggest newspapers, including the LA Times, Chicago Tribune, New York Daily News and Baltimore Sun. "In particular, the complaint singles out the way companies obtain consent for the privacy policies, asking users to check a box in order to access services".

The serial Facebook petitioner and the Austrian lawyer, Max Schrems has registered data protection complaint against the social media giant and its subsidiaries.

Have you been receiving a stream of privacy emails from every random company you had ever given your address to lately?

The complaints were filed by four European Union citizens, from Austria, Belgium, France, and Germany.

Senator Ed Markey and three fellow lawmakers introduced a resolution this week that would call on firms to offer the same protections of the European law in the US.

"This (forced consent) is an issue that we will be looking at immediately, and work is already under way", said Helen Dixon, head of the Irish Data Protection Commissioner, which will be responsible for policing USA giants Facebook and Google, among others.

US news outlets including The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times and The Arizona Daily Star abruptly blocked access to their websites from Europe on Friday, choosing to black out readers rather than comply with a strict new data-privacy law in the European Union that limits what information can be collected about people online.

Critics say the new rules are overly burdensome, especially for small businesses, while advertisers and publishers worry it will make it harder for them to find customers. "A company is expected to provide the same level of protection to relevant personal data that are covered by the GDPR, irrespective of where that data resides or where it gets transferred".

"It's a gradual and not a revolutionary kind of thing ..."

New EU data protection rules are likely to radically change how websites use and share personal information and track users

According to the new chair of the EDPB, Andrea Jelinek, Head of Austria's Data Protection Authority, the Board is fully functioning, despite the fact that not all European Union member states have caught up.

It is hoped that financial companies would step up and share their experience with other industries in Taiwan, he said.

Microsoft this week announced that it will extend the core rights guaranteed under the new regulations to all of its customers worldwide.

Major technology companies have said that they are ready to comply with the GDPR rules. The Board has adopted new guidelines on consent and certification.

Webb said news organizations could find it especially hard to comply because of the need for consent in organizing feeds and promoting content.

GDPR Day is here.

"For example, the outsourcing services will be covered under GDPR".

Vice said that the GDPR will have a significant impact on tech companies because they have relied so heavily on algorithms to provide bespoke experiences for users so that they will stay on sites longer and click on personalized ads or buy more products.
