Go Ahead and Sleep In This Weekend

  • Sleeping in saves lives

"Apparently, sleeping in in on the weekends can be a real help", said Åkerstedt.

They found that people who regularly slept about five hours or less a night, including on weekends, saw a higher mortality rate compared with those who regularly got seven hours.

Torbjörn Åkerstedt, professor at the, led the study, in which his team assessed data gathered from a cohort of 43,880 participants over the course of 13 years.

Don't feel so guilty next time you sleep in at the weekend - it could be prolonging your life.

There's no clear-cut answer yet on why sleeping on weekends makes a difference. It's a question psychologist Torbjorn Akerstedt, director of the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University, and his colleagues tried to answer in a study published Wednesday in the Journal of Sleep Research.

But before you hit the sack to celebrate, the study also found there can be too much of a good thing.

Tropical threat likely to dampen Memorial Day weekend
This is of importance because this convection will move into Florida and other parts of the Southeast-causing flash flooding. The National Hurricane Center says a disturbance moving toward the Gulf of Mexico is now Subtropical Storm Alberto .

However there is a higher mortality risk if a person is consistently getting less than five hours sleep or more than nine hours sleep, compared to people who are consistently sleeping around six to seven hours a night throughout the week.

All that said, however, that doesn't mean you should start depriving yourself of sleep during the work week. The take home point is that possibly, long weekend sleep may compensate for short weekday sleep.

Not in the new study. People in their late teens and 20s slept on average for seven hours a night during the week but 8.5 hours on days off.

Those aged 65 or under who slept five hours or less each day were around 25 % more likely to die than those who snoozed through six to seven hours.

Grandner urged the overworked and underslept not to view sleep as time lost. That's not a healthy approach - as our bodies are built to consume food and water, he pointed out, we are also built to sleep.
