Despite receiving mostly positive reviews from the critics - 71% approval on Rotten Tomatoes and a 63/100 from Metacritic- and the usual marketing overload from your pals at the Mouse House, the best Solo could capture from a wide 4,381-screen count was an estimated $83 million. The latter placed second over the weekend, taking in US$42.7 million between Friday and Sunday, for a two-week domestic total of US$207.4 million. It was a bold call for a holiday break that's typically spent traveling or lounging out in the sun, and sadly, Han and his crew struggled. However, the second anthology film falls far short of monetary expectations in its opening weekend.

There are several theories on why Solo might have bombed. With so many Star Wars projects in the pipeline, the revived film franchise might already be heading toward if not a saturation point, at least the point where the films are no longer an event-type release. Memorial Day is a risky time to open because theaters are competing with travel plans. In four weeks, the Magnolia and Participant Media film has grossed an impressive $6 million.

Even as Disney has perfected the art of the credits scene in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they've somehow resisted shoehorning them into Star Wars. Other franchise newcomers like Daisy Ridley and Felicity Jones played brand new roles and weren't expected to live up to a previous performer. Infinity War added $16.5 million in its fifth weekend to bring its domestic total to $621.7 million and its global sales to $1.9 billion - both among the highest of all-time. The film follows a newly divorced mother who goes back to college to complete her degree, only to end up enrolled in her daughter's classes. It's also the only film to stand pat in the top ten this week as everything slipped down one spot (with Rampage vacating the list altogether) to make room for top-finisher Solo: A Star Wars Story.

For now, Disney is playing it safe by keeping the Star Wars tradition going.
