Facebook is shutting down its Trending Topics section

It was available only in five countries and accounted for less than 1.5% of clicks to the websites of news publishers.

Introduced in 2014, the section, available on desktop and mobile devices, was intended "to help people discover content that is both popular in the world and meaningful to them".

Despite the efforts, conservatives are still targeting Facebook and other technology companies.

Facebook said that "over time people found the product to be less and less useful".

Facebook's controversial Trending section has fallen out of fashion and will be removed next week, along with products and third-party partner integrations that rely on the Trends API.

Facebook also is testing a "breaking news" label with 80 publishers across North America, South America, Europe, India and Australia along with breaking-news notifications.

It appeared to be a rare victory for Afghan security forces, who have struggled to secure the capital in recent months. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, but did not provide evidence for their claim.

Facebook is set to kill its "trending" news section next week after four years and is testing a new breaking news feature that could replace it. But over time, the section failed to gain much traction among users, the company said Friday.

Conservatives were outraged by allegations in 2016 that news curators had suppressed articles from right-leaning news outlets from being featured.

But the curation of trending news in the absence of human oversight led to more blowback and embarrassment.

The social network is also testing a section called "Today In" that aims to connect users to the latest breaking news from local publishers in their respective cities. The changes and features Facebook is putting out, he said, are being treated as "bug fixes" - addressing single problems the way engineers do. She added that the company is exploring new ways to help people stay informed "while making sure the news they see on Facebook is from trustworthy and quality sources".

Another feature, called "Today In", shows people breaking news in their area from local publishers, officials and organizations. More problematic was the feature's tendency to spread fake news, particularly during the 2016 presidential election, The Associated Press noted.

The site is also reportedly working on a live coverage news section as part of Facebook Watch.
