The attack by suspected Al-Shabaab militants occurred on Friday in Somalia's southern Jubaland province, where a small joint US-Somali outpost came under small arms and mortar fire, US defense officials said.

Al-Shabab said it stormed a Somali military base near Bosaso in the country's northeast, blew up a USA military vehicle and downed a US surveillance drone. "The U.S. provided advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission".

One U.S. Special Operations soldier was killed and four U.S. service members and one partner force was wounded as the result of an enemy attack overseas.

A U.S. Africa Command statement says the four wounded are now in the care of the U.S. Embassy medical team in neighboring Kenya.

Friday's joint operation involved both Somali and Kenyan militaries, with the USA providing assistance and surveillance during the operation.

Last year, a Navy SEAL was killed in a nighttime attack in Somalia, marking the first United States military combat death there since the infamous "Black Hawk Down" events of 1993, when 18 American servicemen died in the Battle of Mogadishu.

American forces have been back operating in Somalia for more than a decade.

Search for the missing FlySax plane is yet to start proper in the Aberdares, almost 20 hours after it was reported missing. He confirmed earlier reports that phone signals from the two pilots were traced to the zone where they are focusing on.

Associated Press video on Friday showed Somali forces firing weapons from atop pickup trucks in a muddy rural area, and an unidentified US soldier speaking with local residents. The US had pulled out of the country after 1993, when two helicopters were shot down in Mogadishu and bodies of Americans were dragged through the streets.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of our serviceman who was killed and his fellow servicemen who were wounded in Somolia [sic]".

The Pentagon is withholding the name of the fallen soldier pending next of kin notification.

Al-Shabaab is fighting to overthrow Somalia's central government and establish its own rule based on its interpretation of Islamic law.

us military operations in Africa have come under greater scrutiny since an October 4 ambush by Islamic State militants in the West African country of Niger left four USA soldiers dead. Officials worry the extremist group is in the midst of a resurgence after losing much of the territory it once held in Somalia and many of its fighters in the past several years.

A USA military report on that incident publicized by the Pentagon last month without being fully released found that multiple individual and institutional failures left the US troops vulnerable to the ambush.
