In the communique announced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the group of major industrial nations - Canada, the United States, the UK, France, Italy, Japan and Germany - agreed on the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade" and the importance of fighting protectionism.

After boarding a flight for Singapore, where he will meet North Korea's Kim Jong-un for a historic summit, Trump tweeted: 'PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he "will not be pushed around".

Trudeau said he had told Trump that the talks had been made more complicated by a US decision to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, ostensibly for national security reasons.

"What worries me most, however, is the fact that the rules-based global order is being challenged, quite surprisingly not by the usual suspects but by its main architect and guarantor, the United States".

Following Trudeau's comments regarding the communique, the Canadian leader said "strong, firm conversations on trade and specifically American tariffs" took placed at the G-7 meeting.

Trump's counterparts in the G7 have been scrambling this week to try to find some semblance of consensus with Washington on trade and the other key issues that have formed the basis of the 42-year-old organization.

European officials said Trump had tried to water down the language in the draft final summit communique on the WTO and rules-based trade.

Trudeau's view of how the summit went was a marked contrast to Trump's take.

"No tariffs, no barriers, that's the way it should be, and no subsidies", Trump said on Saturday during a 30-minute press conference in La Malbaie.

Trudeau, G7 leaders to confront Trump on tariffs in opening G7 meeting
Following the steel and aluminum tariffs, Canada, Mexico and the European Union responded with their own tariffs on USA goods. Before the establishment of the federal income tax in 1913, tariffs were a big money raiser for the US government.

A senior British Government source said: "We stand by the commitments made in the G7 communiqué". "Our tariffs are in response to his of 270 per cent on dairy!"

Asked whether she was concerned the President could pull out of the trip if a trade war with the European Union escalates, Mrs May said Mr Trump had said was looking forward to the trip. "Tariffs will come way down".

"We're either going to have NAFTA in a better negotiated form or we're going to have two deals", the USA president said.

President Trump said retaliation tariffs from his allies were a "mistake" and warned that if it got as far as a trade war, then the USA would "win that war a thousand times out of a thousand".

"Whether you like it or not, and it may not be politically correct, but we have a world to run", Trump said on Friday.

French President Emmanuel Macron, for example, noted that under European Union rules France now has open borders with Britain and Germany and runs trade deficits with both - far from Trump's vision of "reciprocal" balanced trade.

Trudeau and Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland later tweeted photos of the women's empowerment meeting, showing Trump's empty chair.

Mr. Trump planned to leave the summit on Saturday before it discussed climate change and the health of oceans, underlining fractures in the G7 exacerbated by USA trade tariffs.
