  • Net Neutrality Ends Today, But The Fight To Protect Internet Speeds Rages On

In the meantime, some ISPs have promised in the absence of the federal net neutrality rules to not slow data or block it, and with state laws in flux and a federal showdown possible, it's unlikely any would push the envelope at present.

It's official. The Federal Communications Commission's repeal of net neutrality protections takes effect today.

Net neutrality, which once required internet service providers to treat all online content the same, is now gone starting Monday. "So now it's up to us to keep raising a ruckus until internet openness is the law of the land".

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months, you've heard about the impending death of net neutrality.

Over the past year, Google and the social media monopolies Facebook and Twitter have moved to implement a regime of internet censorship at the behest of the U.S. intelligence agencies, for which the Democrats have served as the mouthpieces.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who voted in favor of repealing net neutrality, said on CBS This Morning the "Restoring Internet Freedom" rule will be "tremendously positive" for consumers.

If the broadband providers do end up creating fast lanes - or even slowing or blocking traffic - they likely won't do so right away.

The demo included the well-known Socrates and we expect you'll encounter plenty of other famous names along the way. It looks like the game is set six months after the events of the original title, and will take place in Washington.

She worries that with the regulations now expired, some websites will be blocked or censored, and service could slow.

More than 20 states sued the government to stop the repeal, as did the public-interest group Free Press, think tank Open Technology Institute and Firefox browser maker Mozilla.

Lori Miller, with activist group Indivisible Rapid City, believes dumping Net Neutrality was a mistake. How has Amazon's entry changed the grocery business? We had Chairman Ajit Pai on to talk about what will change, how he measures success and what happens if his vision for an open internet doesn't work. But now, with the repeal of net neutrality, users could soon see differences in their browsing.

Opinion polls show overwhelming public support for the net neutrality rules. "For example, we empower the Federal Trade Commission to police internet service providers for anticompetitive acts and unfair or deceptive practices", Pai wrote. Such a scenario could be particularly devastating for startups with ambitions of becoming the next Netflix or Hulu, as they will have a much harder time paying ISP fees to compete early on.

"It's patently illegal for the states to make their own internet policy", Roslyn Layton, a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute who served on President Trump's transition team for the FCC, told CNNMoney last month. Barbara Underwood, New York's attorney general, noted that lawsuits opposing the repeal were still pending.

Broadband providers "remain committed to the principles under which internet innovation has thrived", Mr. Spalter said.

But both of these approaches are expected to lead to court challenges by the FCC, whose new policy on net neutrality contains explicit language that tries to preempt states from doing exactly what the legislation and executive orders are meant to do.
