A second border patrol agent was able to pull over the second vehicle but the third refused to stop. Two people are believed to be USA citizens. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The driver is now in custody with Homeland Security Investigations, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A Border Patrol agent observed three vehicles traveling one behind the other on FM 2664 and suspected a smuggling attempt was happening, the agency said in a statement.

"We've seen this many, many times and not only in this county but other counties along the border", he said.

Both sides of Highway 85 were closed. The driver, believed to be a United States citizen, was rushed to a hospital; the passenger, also believed to be a USA citizen, now is in custody. Officials have not yet released information about the immigrants' countries of origin. Refusing to bow to police commands, the driver of the black SUV, carrying undocumented immigrants, continued to press the pedal to the metal, until the vehicle flipped off a highway in Big Wells, about 130 miles southwest of San Antonio.

This SUV was packed with undocumented immigrants as it crashed trying to escape border patrol. "I think we need a wall in my opinion".

Boyd said the driver of the Suburban was also injured and was flown to a San Antonio hospital.

The sheriff said it was just the latest in a series of police chases involving human and drug smugglers in the Big Wells area.
