Trump defends 'brave' ICE agents as Dems call to abolish agency

Kirsten Gillibrand and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio - echoed the "abolish ICE" calls this week.

President Donald Trump fired off several tweets Saturday morning showing his support for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE), calling it "one of the smartest, toughest, and most spirited law enforcement groups".

During an interview with Fox News' Maria Bartiromo that will air Sunday, Trump elaborated on the issue, saying that without ICE, criminal gangs will swarm the USA and that it's an issue that could harm Democrats in the midterms.

More than 600 marches could draw hundreds of thousands of people across the country, from immigrant-friendly cities like Los Angeles and New York City to conservative Appalachia and Wyoming under the banner Families Belong Together. I gotta say it. After a brief update on the June 28 mass shooting at an Annapolis, MD, newspaper, Tucker Carlson - who uses his platform to promote white nationalism - opened his show by denouncing #AbolishICE as an "ideological revolution on the left" and fearmongering about the criminals and drugs that he claimed would flood the country without ICE.

When CNN's Van Jones asked James Schwab, a former spokesman for ICE's San Francisco division, if he believes the agency should be abolished or shut down, Schwab said, "It just doesn't make sense to me".

Pocan said that shift decreases the confidence of local communities in which ICE must work.

"No matter what they do, we are here to stay", Sinclair said. "I think you should separate the criminal justice from the immigration issues, and I think you should reimagine ICE under a new agency with a very different mission and take those two missions out". But the family separation policy has been a watershed for attracting a broader spectrum of demonstrators, she said.

Donald Trump responds to the "Abolish ICE" movement.

Immigrant advocacy groups say they're thrilled - and surprised - to see the issue gaining traction among those not tied to immigration.

Protestor Peter Dichter said, "Is it a realistic goal to demand the abolishment of the entire agency?"

The office was established only 15 years ago, a move meant to help "protect national security and strengthen public safety", in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, as the agency's website says.

As protesters across the country today demand that children be reunited with their families on the southwest United States border, President Donald Trump defended the work of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Whatever the details, the focus on ICE could cause problems for some potential candidates with more conservative records on immigration.

ICE was created within the newly formed Department of Homeland Security following the passage of the Homeland Security Act of 2002.
