  • Canada Six days of heat wave kill 18 in Quebec temperatures likely to drop on Friday

The worst heat wave in decades has claimed 33 lives in Canada with another day of scorching temperatures and related smog expected Thursday.

While the stifling weather has blanketed other parts of the country, no deaths have been reported elsewhere, but that may be because various jurisdictions have different ways of gathering data on heat-related fatalities.

Most of the victims in Montreal were men in their 50s or older, and living in vulnerable conditions without air conditioning, regional public health director Mylene Drouin has said.

CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward said the region has seen record high temperatures and high humidity since Sunday.

Montreal's health department reported 18 deaths, seven were reported in the Eastern Townships, six were reported in the Mauricie-Centre-du-Québec region, Montérégie's public health department reported two and one more was reported in Laval.

Despite cooler weather Friday, Stefan Overhoff, chief operating officer of Urgences-sante ambulance service, said people who experienced the week's intense heat could still be susceptible to health problems, according to CNN news partner CTV.

"Most of the deaths are a result of chronic illnesses, but due to the high temperatures, it is possible to conclude that the heat has contributed to the high number of deaths".

The canadian province of Quebec has covered a heat wave.

"We go out to the paramedics, we go out to the hospitals and we ask them to make sure to identify any deaths they believe are related to heat and that allows us to intervene more quickly", Kaiser said.

Environment Canada lifted heat warnings Friday, despite expectations that temperatures will once again rise early next week.

Eighteen of the victims were in Montreal, while the rest died in areas across southern Quebec, the officials said.
