The fire was the perhaps the most destructive of several blazes that broke out across Southern California amid oppressive heat that set temperature records all weekend.

As of Saturday night, the Klamathon blaze had forced 750 people to evacuate. About 600 homes are threatened.

Three dozen large fires continue to burn in 11 states across the West on Saturday as dry air and hot temperatures have settled in.

Durtschi's home was among 20 structures destroyed by the fire weeks after he moved from Idaho.

The so-called Holiday fire "exploded Friday night amid 100-degree temperatures and unsafe "sundowner" winds that made the blaze impossible to control", the Los Angeles Times wrote. "We're talking hundreds of homes".

A local California official says a deadly blaze burning near the OR border moved swiftly through the rural area that is home to many retirees.

"The firefighters have done outstanding work", Farris said. "It hit there pretty quick".

"We've lost everything. Everything is gone".

Elsewhere in Northern California, the County Fire has charred 88,525 acres (35824.8 hectares) in sparsely populated wooded areas of Napa and Yolo Counties.

The communities of Hornbrook, Hilt, Colestin and around Iron Gate Reservoir.

Netflix testing new 'Ultra Tier'
In the wake of being named the number one choice for TV viewing, Netflix has been testing out a new payment option. She said: "We continuously test new things at Netflix and these tests typically vary in length of time".

Another fire burning near the California-Oregon line, known as the Klamathon Fire, has left one person dead.

OR authorities urged hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts to avoid forests near the state line. The areas of concern include the Pacific Crest Trail, Mount Ashland and the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. He then said he had been grilling in a permanent fire pit the day before the wildfire started.

Fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni says there's no wind at all Saturday morning - a far different situation than Friday night when the fire erupted and was spread wildly by 50 miles per hour (80 kph) gusts.

Other major fires in the state are close to being fully contained.

"Temperatures at 8 a.m. were ridiculously over 100 degrees" in foothills near Forest Falls and many inland valleys, the National Weather Service said. The fire quickly grew to about 1.5 square miles. One blaze reportedly burned at least five homes in Alpine. The governor also declared a state of emergency for the county.

Officials say the 100-acre (40.5-hectare) fire in Goleta is 80 percent contained Saturday and numerous 2,500 evacuated residents will be able to return by late afternoon. But the threat of a deluge raised the possibility of flooding at a stubborn blaze in the southwestern corner of the state. That fire has scorched about 85 square miles (220 square kilometers) and is 50 percent contained. They say it is just smouldering and rain over the coming days should keep it from spreading.

A firefighter puts water on flames at a home on Fairfield Avenue in Goleta. Gov. John Hickenlooper visited the area Friday. The body of a resident was found Friday in the ruins of a home, among 15 destroyed structures tallied so far.

He suffered severe burns to his face and had to be flown to UC Davis' burn center, according to KOBI. Many homes and cabins likely burned, while others may be sheds or garages.

In Utah, authorities allowed the return of some residents who fled a wildfire near a popular fishing lake 80 miles (130 kilometers) southeast of Salt Lake City. Highway 12 is closed from mile markers 7 to 22.5.

Authorities believe human activity sparked the blaze, but an exact cause hasn't been determined.
