To date, the first 19 titles have earned a jaw-dropping $17 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing film franchise of all-time.

Ant-Man and the Wasp squashed the competition at the North American box office. Between the billion dollar grossing tallies for Infinity War and Marvel's Black Panther, plus the impressive $727 million worldwide total now posted by Fox's Deadpool 2, superhero movies have made up 57 percent of the total box office in 2018. While the Ant-Man and the Wasp opening weekend did manage to exceed the debut of its predecessor, the increase wasn't quite as big as other second movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ant-Man and the Wasp easily topped the weekend, as fellow box office newcomer The First Purge scared up US$17 million from 3,031 theatres.

With $161 million in ticket sales and an 86 percent rating at Rotten Tomatoes, Ant-Man and The Wasp did what a good sequel should do by improving over the original.

The biggest factor for Ant-Man and The Wasp not doing better in the USA is the juggernaut Pixar film, Incredibles 2, which was the top box office draw since its debut on June 15. I'll probably see it this week, but I don't think Ant-Man and the Wasp comes off as a "must see" Marvel movie.

This is intriguing, because in a movie landscape where doomsayers constantly predict the breaking point of superhero movie saturation is right around the corner, the masked and caped genre in general, and Marvel Studios in particular, have been doing much of the heavy lifting at the box office. Cathleen Taff, Disney's head of domestic distribution, told Variety, "We are really thrilled about the results".

Even the smallest of superheroes can earn big box office numbers. Internationally, "Incredibles 2" has made $269 million.

Coming in third is Universal and Amblin's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which brought in an estimated $28.5 million for the three-day weekend and has now pushed its domestic cume to $333.3 million as it begins its third week in release. The Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin-led sequel picked up another US$7.6 million, taking the domestic tally to US$35 million.

At the specialty box office, Roadside Attractions and Miramax's "Whitney" bowed with $1.3 million from 452 locations.

Also opening in limited release was Annapurna's "Sorry to Bother You", which landed the best per screen average of the weekend with $44,881. So far, Incredibles 2 has made $773 million at the worldwide box office. In five weeks, the documentary on Fred Rogers has amassed an impressive $12.4 million.

The 2018 box office, which just hit US$6.5 billion, is up 9 per cent from a year ago, according to ComScore.
