Still, the veteran diplomat sees the need for Pompeo, with the backing of the president, to continue negotiating with North Korea for the sake of the USA, its allies in the region and the rest of the world.

"At first people paid attention because it was a lecture on South Korea, but as the criticisms continued people began to nod off", the source said.

"I have confidence that Kim Jong Un will honor the contract we signed &, even more importantly, our handshake", Trump said in a tweet, playing up the personal relationship between himself and Kim.

"We had expected that the United States side would offer constructive measures that would help build trust based on the spirit of the leaders' summit. we were also thinking about providing reciprocal measures", it said.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meets with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Abe's official residence in Tokyo on Sunday.

"The issues the USA side insisted on during the talks were the same cancerous ones that the past US administrations had insisted on", it added.

Speaking privately, U.S. officials suggested the North Korean statement was a negotiating tactic.

"The US just came out with such unilateral and gangster-like denuclearization demands as CVID, declaration, and verification that go against the spirit of the North-US summit meeting", he added, calling the talks "really disappointing".

US, China fire first shots in ‘largest trade war in economic history’
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell by as much as 1.52% in the morning before finishing the session up 0.45% on Friday. After that, Trump has made it clear he is planning additional duties on Chinese products worth a staggering $500 billion.

North Korean officials also described the ongoing negotiations as "gangster-like" demands but Pompeo downplayed the comments and blamed the press for criticizing the progress made so far.

Countries concerned, including South Korea and Japan, should realize the long and hard path to North Korea's denuclearization.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ended his latest trip to North Korea on Saturday without meeting leader Kim Jong-un and trailed by accusations of "gangster-like" arm-twisting from a newly emboldened regime. Trump reminded Kim about the agreement signed in Singapore last month. "It can be your miracle in North Korea as well", Mr Pompeo said.

Kim made a broad commitment in Singapore to "work toward denuclearization" but did not give details on how or when he would dismantle North Korea's nuclear program. However, he left with a harsh reminder that the North Korean leader expects something in return.

His two days of talks with senior North Korean officials had "made progress", and included a "detailed and substantive discussion about the next steps towards a fully verified and complete denuclearization, he said".

Pompeo also said that the United States was working to ensure the security assurances that the North Koreans need to continue with denuclearization. "But this expectation and hope of ours was so naive as to be gullible", the statement said. The US president is said to consider personal rapport between leaders as key in bilateral negotiations between nations.

U.S. President Donald Trump walks from Air Force One as he arrives in Great Falls, Montana, U.S., July 5, 2018.

"It's certainly a setback and a change of heart and a very different picture coming from the North Korean side". But for political considerations, including the fight for control of Congress in November elections, would Trump make a deal?
