  • A U.S. service member was killed and two others were wounded in an “apparent insider attack” in southern Afghanistan

The Taliban proceeded to murder 17 Afghan police officers in a predawn attack, then announced its own three-day cease-fire, although it stressed that attacks on everyone it considered a "foreign invader" would continue.

However, the statement said it was "an apparent insider attack".

The NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan, Resolute Support, said that the incident was under investigation and that the two wounded U.S. service members are being treated and are in stable condition.

It was not immediately clear who carried out the attack, or whether they had been apprehended. In that incident, a Romanian soldier was injured.

A Taliban spokesman said in a statement that the attack occurred at an airbase in Tarinkot, capital of Uruzgan province.

What McConnell reportedly said about Trump's potential Supreme Court nominees
Meanwhile, the Senate's top Democrat wasted no time in sharing his displeasure at Trump's choice to replace Justice Kennedy. Prior to his time as a judge he oversaw an investigation into the death of a deputy counsel for President Bill Clinton .

Pompeo also added, perhaps optimistically given Afghanistan's long history of resisting foreign forces, that the Taliban were "beginning to see that they can not wait us out".

The last insider attack that resulted in a US casualty occurred in June 2017, according to NATO Resolute Support officials.

On New Year's Day, a USA soldier was killed and four others wounded in combat operations in the eastern province of Nangarhar. The last insider attack that resulted in a USA casualty occurred two months earlier, in June of past year.

Pompeo said the US will "support, facilitate, and participate in these discussions", but emphasized negotiations with the Taliban must be "Afghan-led and Afghan-owned".

The Pentagon has identified the soldier killed in an apparent insider attack Sin Afghanistan as Army Cpl. Afghan commandos carried out the operation with support from US special forces and air power. A U.S. Defense Department report released earlier this month found civilian casualties had increased 73 percent between December and May compared to the same period the year before.
