Trump willing to shut down government over wall

  • US President Donald Trump is once again threatening a government shutdown unless Congress approves funding for a wall on the US-Mexico border

Republicans and Democrats alike denounced the separations during the hearing as Albence insisted migrants get excellent care.

A top Health and Human Services official said the agency had warned the administration that separating children from their parents would be detrimental to their health.

"During the deliberative process over the previous year, we raised a number of concerns in the (Office of Refugee Resettlement) program about any policy which would result in family separation due to concerns we had about the best interest of the child as well as about whether that would be operationally supportable with the bed capacity that we have", White testified.

President Donald Trump says he's willing to shut down the government if Democrats refuse to vote for his immigration proposals, including building a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border.

-879 parents successfully reunified in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.

"There's no question that separation of children from parents entails significant potential for traumatic psychological injury to the child", White said. "Who thinks that the family separation policy has been a success - raise your hand", he continued. He blasted a different HHS official who had filed a court document that Sabraw described as a clear attempt to deflect blame for any damage caused by the administration's "zero tolerance" policy.

The hearing was convened in order to discuss the Trump administration policy that led to thousands of immigrant kids being separated from their parents. Trump dropped the policy more than a month ago under fire from Democrats and Republicans alike.

GOP Sen. Ron Johnson said Sunday he disagrees with President Donald Trump's willingness to shut the government down over Trump's wishes for a wall along the US-Mexico border.

Lawmakers and journalists who have visited some detention facilities around the country and migrants themselves have reported poor conditions.

Albence is also defending his agency's treatment of detained immigrants following reports that some suffered sexual and other forms of abuse at government detention facilities.

It only says we are considering a loan offer, which may be even more likely now considering the situation with Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Democrat Richard Durbin of IL said he wanted Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to resign, saying the policy shows "the extremes this administration will go to to punish families fleeing" awful conditions, adding, "Someone in this administration has to accept responsibility". Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., elevated yet another issue to the administration's list of immigration problems. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Sen.

But Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), one of several GOP lawmakers now crafting a bill to overturn Flores, said repealing the protections and indefinitely detaining families would be the best alternative to the forced separations.

Trump had said during his campaign that Mexico would pay for his wall, but Mexico has balked at that request.

"I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle towards closing loopholes and improving our immigration system, as well as finding humane ways to address the influx of immigrants into our country", Cuellar added.

He pointed to statements by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen who said after Trump reversed the separation policy that the government does "not have a policy of separating families at the border. But public reports ... indicate that many of them may not have made an informed choice to leave their children behind", Grassley said.

"Please understand, there are consequences when people cross our Border illegally, whether they have children or not - and many are just using children for their own sinister purposes", Trump said.

Officials from ICE and Health and Human Services said they keep records of migrants who have been detained and have documentation of parents who left the US without their children. When asked how many of those immigrants were not deported because they won their asylum case, ICE said it did not track that data.

He said congressional critics 'offer no plausible or workable solution at all'.

Asked whether he would set a deadline for reuniting the remaining children, White said he was awaiting guidance from the courts. While he commended administration officials for reuniting many parents in its custody with their children, it faulted them for leaving hundreds of families still apart and warning that a better system must be in place.
