Zimbabwe opposition says its candidate won

  • Supporters of Zimbabwe's opposition party attend a rally in Chitungwiza outside Harare Zimbabwe

They went on the rampage down Harare's busy streets towards an old Zanu-PF office with large stones, sticks and anything they could grab along the way.

Live ammunition has been fired at people protesting against the election results, while soldiers have been seen on the streets.

Riot police used water cannon and tear gas to control chaotic scenes as crowds burned tyres and pelted police vans with stones.

Results so far indicate Zanu-PF won 109 seats, while opposition party Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) claimed just 41, giving incumbent president Emmerson Mnangagwa a majority.

"We urge leaders of all parties to call for calm..."

The election stands as an important test for Zimbabwe as the country tries to rebuild its economy and global standing after almost four decades of Mugabe rule.

The MDC also questioned the pace of releasing results from the presidential vote.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has yet to release even preliminary results, but it has five days to release the final tally, and it says it is confident of doing so within that time frame.

The EU's assessment is critical in determining whether Zimbabwe can fix its image and attract the foreign investors needed for an economic revival.

Electoral officials warned that gathering the results of Monday's poll, which President Emmerson Mnangagwa said looked "extremely positive" for him, was "nowhere near" complete and no announcement would be made until as late as Saturday.

Zimbabwe's police say they have invoked a strict security act that forbids public gatherings after security forces swept into the capital to disperse hundreds of opposition protesters angry over Monday's election results.

If ZANU-PF wins at least 30 of the outstanding seats it would have a two-thirds majority that would allow it to make constitutional changes without the votes of other members of parliament.

European Union observers are due to give their preliminary report on Zimbabwe's election later on Wednesday, two days after its first ballot since Robert Mugabe was ousted by the military after 37 years in power.

The EU mission also said it would deliver a more detailed assessment of how the election results are handled and announced at a later stage.

MDC did not immediately respond to the parliamentary results but earlier on Wednesday party leader and presidential contender Nelson Chamisa, 40, said the presidential results were being faked.

The mission said "a truly level playing field was not achieved" in the election, pointing out the "misuse of state resources, instances of coercion and intimidation, partisan behaviour by traditional leaders and overt bias in state media".

The opposition MDC, led by Nelson Chamisa, won in most urban centres, where it enjoys majority support. Its population of 13 million is struggling amid shortages of foreign currency, unemployment above 80% and lack of foreign investment.

Biti, Zimbabwe's minister of finance from 2009 to 2013, accused Zanu-PF of trying to "manipulate" the results, called V11 forms.
